Islington Allotments

The site is provided with a high technology composting toilet that is connected to neither the mains water, nor drainage systems and relies on the natural breakdown of waste projects by means of enzymes and natural solar heating and ventilation.

In addition, a prototype solar rain-harvesting unit was developed and installed that is capable of harvesting rainwater from the roofs of adjacent buildings and storing the water in readiness to be pumped to dipping tanks throughout the allotments to allow the users to water the gardens without the need to use treated drinking mains water. This system works automatically and allows for harvested rainwater to be available for up to 8 weeks without rainfall.

The waiting list in Islington for allotments is said to be close to 80 years, so obviously we are pleased to be involved in such a project that allows members of the public to have access to a small urban garden to allow them to grow their own food under natural conditions.

The entire allotment scheme has been designed to be accessible to disabled visitors and there are a number of raised beds designed specifically for disabled gardeners. We look forward to progressing similar projects with Islington and other Boroughs throughout London.
